As If You Needed Another Reason...

Ready for another reason to vote blue next Tuesday? Let's go back in time to 2009, when President Obama had just been sworn in and liberal anger was still white-hot against the Bush administration. Remember how so many wanted to prosecute the entire administration for war crimes, dragging out a simple campaign slogan of "no more war" to what would've been a lengthy, bitterly-divisive, and costly investigation?

Well, President Obama put the kibosh on that right out of the gate, promising that he would move forward with rebuilding the nation and stopping the wars before he dragged out the skeletons from W's closet and put his brand-new presidency at risk. Plenty of liberals wanted more, and as new evidence comes to light, we've seen that they likely had a point, especially about allegations that the administration ignored key warnings that  coulda-woulda-shoulda prevented 9/11.

Or that they were torturing prisoners in defiance of the Geneva Convention.

Or that they lied about the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Or that they proceeded with the invasion of Iraq in opposition to international law.

Or... Or...

I think you get the point. Now let's come back to the present. I shouldn't have to tell you about the many controversies, manufactured or otherwise, that have cropped up from right-wing circles about President Obama and his administration. We've seen already that prominent Republicans like Darrell Issa have no qualms about making their own highly-public "investigations" into anything that they think will embolden their base and/or hurt the president. They will literally stop at nothing. So in light of what I've just talked about with President Obama flatly declaring that Bush administration officials are to be given immunity from trials, what do you think will happen if Mitt Romney is elected?

Let me tell you.

His administration will give carte blanche to the likes of Darrell Issa, Joe Arpaio, and any other crackerjack conspiracy theorist to launch their own "investigations" into anything about Barack Obama (and anyone who worked for him) that they feel inclined to blow smoke about. The birther quests and Benghazi bloviations of today will look like child's play in comparison.

Now am I arguing that we re-elect the president to shield him from legitimate investigations in the case of actual wrong-doing on the part of himself or his employees? Certainly not. In the case that he or his administration screws up, they should be held accountable according to legal procedure, but not to some vindictive kangaroo court that a Romney presidency would be powerless to stop, if it didn't outright endorse one.

And who's to say that such retribution would stop at Barack Obama and key administration officials? To play a little devil's advocate here, why not also draw in Democratic members of Congress, on the national and state levels? And why not key Democratic fundraisers and activists? Furthermore, what about the volunteers who could also be implicated? And why not take it all the way down to the very root of the "problem": to the very people who voted for him in the first place?

In case you've been asleep these past few months- well, really years- you've no doubt heard people tell you that "this election is the most important one of our generation". Well guess what: they're right. Absolutely, positively right. And before you go accusing me of spreading just another conspiracy theory, just remember who we're dealing with. Remember where their priorities lie: uteri, guns, and theocracy. Now remember that we are the only tangible thing standing between them and total control of the three things I just mentioned.

Do you really need another reason to make Tuesday "Blues-day"? Really?

  1. Every election I've ever participated in has been the "most important of our lifetime." I have no argument with that statement, as every time we elect a President, it's an important responsibility. I hope everyone takes the process very seriously and exercises their very precious right (and duty) to vote - on paper whenever possible.

I can easily see the scenario you've presented if we should have to endure a Romney presidency. (I just threw up in my mouth a little typing those last three words.) That said, I have so many valid reasons to vote for Obama already that this one is just one more; for anyone who's still undecided (who ARE these people???), perhaps this potential scenario is what it would take to push them into the blue column. Kudos for presenting it for consideration, regardless.

Nothing the Repubs do surprises me anymore, but I shake my head at their hypocrisy so often that it's bound to fall right off my neck soon. And then, I'll *really* need Obamacare. ;-)

I'll be voting Dem across-the-board on Tuesday, with high hopes that I'll be in good enough company to turn AZ blue. C'mon, AZ, let's DO this! :-)

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I realize it's a cliche statement to say this election is the most important, but you make a good point as to why it's valid every time.

As indicated in the title, this is just one of many reasons to vote Democratic next week. However, even a few minds changed by this topic- one that I haven't really seen brought up elsewhere- will be totally worth it.

You know I live in AZ too, right? You're not the only blue voter in Sand Land after all!

    2. Yep, I know you're here, too. Makes me proud to know that the populace here is becoming more and more enlightened. I chalk that up to the increasing number of transplants, but it's a good thing, no matter how or why it's happening. ;-)

The comments on this recent post on FB give me real hope for the state, as there are far more of "us" here than I thought! :-D https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=368652899890845&set=a.135440809878723.31061.135432559879548&type=1&relevant_count=1&ref=nf

  2. It is the most important, because the potential for world wide disaster has escalated since the last election. As the conditions visited upon us by the handful of those possessing obscene wealth and power inch us ever more precariously toward the brink of self-annihilation, each presidential election surpasses the last in its power to cause or avert tragedy. How many more wars can the world endure? How much more serious can the economic collapse become before it becomes unsalvageable? How much longer can our environment endure the tragic consequences of corporate looting? A Romney will will tear America apart, and possibly the world. Everything is at stake.

  3. With the little information that Myth Robme has provided he's going to take us into another war. We can't afford a person like Robme into the White House. It's Bush 2 all over again. It's mind boggling how anybody can vote for someone like Robme given all the flip flopping he's done. Get out and vote for Obama/Biden!

  4. Dear Mr. SK, My only problem with your essay - pointed, truthful, and incredibly well-stated as it is - you are preaching to the choir. There is no getting through to the other side. I know this from personal experience. Once the media like Fox News have frightened the people into thinking ''something bad will happen - we'll tell you what later,'' Maslow springs into action, they plummet to the depths of the hierarchy, and all else is lost. Thanks for sharing, I just wish the right people could read this and believe it. People who were already accusing President Obama of destroying the economy in December, 2008 can't be reached. Their brains are missing.

    1. I know I'm preaching to the choir, at least to some degree. While it boggles my mind that anyone could still be undecided at this point in the race, they're apparently still out there. Even one mind changed is one more vote for progress, and one more against the GOP and their agenda.
